Anwar Megbli, an Italian footballer, has reportedly passed away after falling off the back of a moped in a tragic accident.
Megbli, who is 18 years old, was on the books at Livorno. He fell from a moped on Saturday night.
The Italian footballer was riding on the back of a friend’s vehicle when it collided with a car, and he was immediately airlifted to Cisanello Hospital in Pisa via helicopter.
Megbli was treated immediately but passed away on Monday while his friend is still recovering from his injuries.
Anwar Megbli was a prospect at the Serie D side, and he has receive call ups to the senior squad throughout last season despite playing for the U19s.
Livorno posted an emotional message after his passing saying: “No, you can’t die at 18. Today, following a tragic road accident between San Vincenzo and Donoratico in the night between Saturday and Sunday, Anwar Megbli, striker born in 2005 for the national Juniors of the Unione Sportiva Livorno 1915, lost his life.”
“The whole company expresses its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones in this moment of deep sorrow. You will always be with us.”
Livorno’s sporting director Marco Braccini who first spotted Megbli said “he was a natural talent” and also claiming the teenager “played like Arjen Robben”.
U.S.D Castiglioncello, Megbli’s former side, shared a touching tribute to the player with an image of him as a young player celebrating.
The statement read: “Having heard the tragic news of the death of Anwar Megbli, an 18-year-old boy who grew up in the Giovanissimi Azzurri, we express our sincere condolences to his family, friends and team-mates.”
“We want to remember you like this, together with your exultant companions for a derby won thanks to your fantastic left foot!”
Italian side Pescara also paid condolences, posting: “A big hug to the family of Anwar Megbli, 18-year-old promise from Livorno, who died in a car accident. Rest in peace Meg.”
Though not much information are out there about Anwar Megbli, from the messages by his present and former club, it shows he was a talented footballer.
