Former Manchester United player, Rio Ferdinand seems impressed with Odion Ighalo’s performance in the club in the last few months and wants the club to extend his stay in Old Trafford. Odion Ighalo‘s move to Old Trafford earlier this year looks more like a miracle, it was close to the deadline of the transfer window when red devils landed Ighalo from China, an event that put Ole Solskjær under heavy criticism.
Manchester United run out of striker when Marcus Rashford got injured earlier this year and the club was without a forward. All plans to sign a striker proved abortive until the dying minute for the transfer window’s closure. Though, the former Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker was placed in isolation for 14days considering the fact that China has been badly affected by the novel COVID-19.
He was left out of training due to isolation which made him miss some games, however, he made his debut for Manchester United in a 2-0 win against Chelsea in Stamford Bridge. Ighalo was brought in as substitute for Anthony Martial at the 89th minutes, nevertheless, he still made some impressive move in that game.
Reasonably, he scored his debut goal in his first start for Manchester United when the English club trashed Clubb Bruge in the Europa League competition round of 16 return leg. Altogether, Ighalo has scored four times for Manchester United in three starts. Whereas, when he was newly recruited, many football critics opined that it only shows how much Manchester United recruitment standard has fallen. However, he has proved all critics wrong as he hit the ground running since he came into the club.
Reasonably, Rio Ferdinand while speaking to newsmen stated that he was one of the people criticizing Ole Gunnar Solskjær when he made a late gamble in bringing the Nigerian player into the club. He, however, stated that Ighalo has proved them all wrong. In his words:
“All the people that out there that were saying: ‘What are we doing signing Ighalo? What’s going on? What’s Ole thinking?’ – I was one of them, I have to admit it.
“Ighalo’s been in China, the league’s nowhere near what the Premier League is so how is he going get up to speed? Is he going to be ready straight away? We need somebody to come and make an impact immediately. Coming from China, impossible.
“Well, he’s proved us all wrong. This guy has proved us all wrong. It’s refreshing to see someone who is like a supporter, who is thankful. “And I think he’s warranted the opportunity to come in as a full-time player and what he’s given Manchester United which they didn’t have is someone they can pass the ball into and can hold it up, he’s got a physical presence, he can hold off a defender or two and lay the ball in for someone else to score.”
Odion Ighalo’s stay in Old Trafford is not certain amidst the current coronavirus outbreak that has affected football. His loan with the red devils will expire at the end of the season.
