Florentino Perez claims that signing Erling Haaland was irrelevant as Real Madrid already have a clinical finisher like Karim Benzema

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claimed that Erling Haaland would not have been able to replace Karim Benzema in the starting lineup if the club had signed him.

For a long time, Haaland was linked with a move to Real Madrid, but he signed a contract with Premier League champions Manchester City instead.

Los Blancos also missed out on long-term target Kylian Mbappe this summer, as the Frenchman chose to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite failing to land either of these high-profile signings, Perez remained unconcerned. After previously claiming that Mbappe had been “forgotten,” the president now claimed that signing Haaland would have been a bad decision.

“We have the best nine in the world and we weren’t going to bring in Haaland to have him on the bench, right?” Florentino Perez told El Chiringuito. “We have no interest now other than to build the new team with the youngsters we have and some reinforcement.”

Benzema has been in outstanding form in recent seasons, scoring 44 goals and assisting 15 times in just 46 games during the 2012/13 season. With his current form, he is a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or in 2022.

Despite missing out on Mbappe and Haaland, Real have already made two significant additions to their roster this summer, signing Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco and Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer when his Chelsea contract expired.
