Fernandinho gets a mosaic and a training pitch ahead of his last game as a Manchester City player

    After nine years at Manchester City, Fernandinho will play his last game as a City player this afternoon, May 22, 2022, which means his reign as the club’s captain is over.

    Ahead of his last game for the Premier League club which will be against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City unveiled a mosaic of Fernandinho.

    Fernandinho’s mosaic is at Manchester City Football Academy in front of a training pitch dedicated to the Brazilian defensive midfielder.

    Hours before the Premier League clash against Villa which will kick off at 16:00, pictures of Fernandinho participating in the unveiling of the mosaic surfaced on the internet.

    The mosaic was inspired by Fernandinho’s goal in Manchester City’s 7-2 win over Stoke City in 2017. Note that the goal won Manchester City’s goal of the season award for the 2017-2018 season.

    Speaking at the unveiling of the mosaic and the training pitch, Manchester City chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, said: “This is the perfect tribute to Fernandinho, a player who has served this club with distinction for over nine years. He is a player who has earned everyone’s respect, not just for his performances, which have always been of a consistently high level, but also for his attitude and application. He is a true professional.

    “To play so many matches and win 12 trophies – with the chance to win another Premier League title in his final game – is a testament to his ability.

    “His place in Manchester City history is assured. He deserves this tribute and I hope every young footballer who sees this mosaic is inspired by the career he has had.”

    While Fernandinho said: “To have a mosaic and pitch in my honor here at the City Football Academy is an incredible gesture, and I am very grateful to the Club. I could never have imagined this when I signed.

    “It’s been an amazing period of my life and coming to Manchester City was the best decision I have ever made. This is a special way to bring an end to my time here.”

    Fernandinho joined Manchester City from Shakhtar Donetsk on July 1, 2013, for a transfer fee worth €40 million. Since the 37-year-old defensive midfielder joined the club, the Brazilian has scored 26 goals and provided 33 assists in 382 games in all competitions.

    In his last season at Manchester City, 2021-2022 season, Fernandinho played 32 games in all competitions in which he scored two goals and provided three assists.

    The Brazilian defensive midfielder helped Manchester City to win four Premier League titles, six EFL Cups, and one FA Cup. He is on the verge of helping Manchester City to win another Premier League title this afternoon to make it 5 Premier League titles in 9 years at City.

    His contract with Manchester City will expire on June 30, 2022, which means that Fernandinho will be without a club from July 1, 2022, if a club fails to sign him before then.
