Bayern Munich, German champions were defeated just a week after clinching their second Bundesliga title, yet they nonetheless went on a team vacation to Ibiza.
The Bayern Munich team’s journey to Ibiza following Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Mainz in the Bundesliga has sparked considerable debate in Germany.
The Bavarian giants’ winning streak came to an end a week after they won their 10th straight Bundesliga title as Mainz overpowered Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Following the defeat, the team went on a two-day trip to Ibiza, much to the chagrin of club great and analyst Lothar Matthaus.
What exactly did Matthaus have to say about Bayern Munich?
On Sky, the former Germany star said: “It’s just inappropriate, especially after a game like this. If you had won yesterday, I would advise you to spend three days in Ibiza.”
He said, ” “After this game, it’s impossible! Not only because of the players but also because of the general perception of FC Bayern. Bayern fans become enraged, and the players then depart on holiday.
“After such a show, free days are usually canceled.”
Hertha Berlin coach Felix Magath criticized Bayern for taking their foot off the throttle immediately after winning the league title, and Matthaus is not the only notable German voice to criticize them this weekend.
“The season lasts until the last matchday for all teams, therefore I don’t understand how a team can claim, “We won’t play the season till the end and will coast through three matchdays before closing.” It is not beneficial to the Bundesliga or the competition “he stated
What has Bayern done in response?
Hasan Salihamdzic, Bayern director, justified the team’s vacation in Ibiza, telling Sport1: “The players told us last week that they wanted to spend their free days in Ibiza as a group.
“It was accepted as a team-building activity.
“I learned as a player that dealing with losses may make you stronger.
“A group excursion like this may be the foundation for that.”
