Canelo Alvarez has revealed why he apologized to Lionel Messi during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Alvarez lashed out at Messi on social media during the tournament, as he accused the 37-year-old of disrespecting the national flag of Mexico.
His comments came after Argentina defeated Mexico 2-0 at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail, Qatar.
Lionel Messi scored in the encounter, netting the opener for Le Albiceleste in the 64th minute before Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez scored 3 minutes before the end of regulation time.
Speaking on why he apologized to Messi, Canelo Alvarez during an interview with Univision Fresno expressed that it was basically down to him acknowledging that he was wrong.
Alvarez said: “You have to admit when you are wrong. It doesn’t make you better or worse. You have to admit when you make a mistake.”
The 33-year-old Mexican professional boxer also claimed that his initial brash comments were borne out of his support for the Mexican team at the tournament.
He added: “The euphoria of supporting the Mexican team at the moment and to see them losing like that….Well obviously, you don’t put too much thought into your actions. But you have to recognize when you mess up and that is it.”
