Everton football club thanked coach Carlo Ancelotti after he abandoned the Premier League club to return to Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Before now, the 61-year-old Italian coach has insisted that he wasn’t leaving Everton when reports started speculating that he was linked to a move back to the Bernabeu.

However, days after coach Zinedine Zidane resigned, Real Madrid made Carlo Ancelotti their top choice to replace the French tactician. The club confirmed the return of the veteran coach hours after the news broke that he was their top choice.

Ancelotti left Everton after 18 months at the helm of affairs at the Merseyside club. His contract with the Premier League club was meant to expire at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Carlo Ancelotti won FIFA Club World Cup for Real Madrid before he was sacked in 2015.

Recall that when it was announced that the government of the United Kingdom has approved the construction of Everton’s new stadium which will be commissioned ahead of the 2024-2025 season, Ancelotti said he wished he could remain the coach of the club when the club moves into the new stadium.

But that would not be. He left Everton after helping them to remain in the top 10 in the 2019-2020 season and also did the same in the 2020-2021 season.

In his last season at Everton, he led the club to record 17 wins, 8 draws, and 13 defeats in the Premier League which made them finish 10th with 59 points in 38 games.

A statement from the club read: “Everton can confirm that Carlo Ancelotti has left his position as manager to take up the role of Head Coach at Real Madrid.

“Everton would like to place on record its thanks to Carlo for his service to the Club over the past 18 months.

“The Club will begin the process of appointing a new manager immediately and will provide updates in due course.”

Ancelotti who coached Real Madrid between 2013 and 2015 and won the UEFA Champions League before he was sacked, took to Twitter after it was announced that he has been appointed the new coach of Real Madrid, to write “Hala Madrid”.

Based on his contract with Real Madrid, the Italian coach is expected to remain at the Spanish side until the end of the 2023-2024 season after which the club could extend his contract.

In his message of appreciation to Everton after he had signed the deal with Real Madrid, Ancelotti said: “I would like to thank the Board of Directors, the players, and the Evertonians for the tremendous support they have all given me during my time at the Club.

“I have complete respect for everyone associated with Everton and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them.

“While I have enjoyed being at Everton I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time.”
