Europa League: Inter Milan hits five past Shaktar Donetsk to set up a final with Sevilla

Inter Milan has finally secured their first final in European competition since 20110-11 season after beating Ukrainian champion, Shaktar Donetsk in the semi-final of the Europa League.

Antonio Conte’s men whitewashed Shaktar 5-0 at Dusseldorf to set up final against the five-time winner, Sevilla who defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the other semifinal.

Inter Milan celebrates goal

A magnificent Inter performance is a statement on intent on winning the title. Inter’s strikers, Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku shared braces in the rout.

Since both sides came into the competition after emerging third in their respective Champions League groups, they have been in good forms. Inter came into the match on the back of ten unbeaten games run while Shaktar was having 11 games unbeaten after defeating Wosfburg, and Basel in the last 16 and quarter-finals convincingly.

Martinez put Inter in the lead in the 19th minute when the Nerazzurri saw got a breakthrough with practically the first chance of the game after a cagey start. Nicolò Barella was able to intercept a loose ball due to his pressing and burst down the right. He then whipped in a cross for Martinez who headed in his first goal in the Europa League this season.

The Ukrainians got into action looking for an equalizer, but Stefan de Vrij made a decisive block from Junior Moraes shot after he got a pass from Dodo across the field.

Barella continued the high pressing for Inter and he stung Andriy Pyatov’s gloves later from a tricky angle.

Martinez was stopped from scoring his brace by Pyatov’s full stretch after the Argentine caught defenders in the possession and immediately unleashed a lob in the restart.

Shakhtar had their first real and only chance in the second half through Junior Moraes again. The Brazilian aimed a header straight at Samir Handanovic, who made an instinctive save from close range.

Inter doubled their lead some minutes later moments through Danilo D’Ambrosio’s header from a Marcelo Brozovic corner from six yards.

Martinez later got his brace when Brozovic won back the ball with the high press and released it to Lukaku, who combined with Roberto Gagliardini to set up the striker for a lovely curled finish low into the far bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Lukaku has scored 14 goals in ten Europa League games

Martinez later skipped past three defenders and placed a wonderfully disguised pass-through for Lukaku, who fired in the angled drive with his left foot to make it four. The goal sets a new record for the Belgian who has now scored in his 10th consecutive Europa League game.

The Belgian will later get his brace as well after collecting a pass from Stefan de Vrij in midfield, sprinted past Khocholava, and nutmegged the goalkeeper for 5-0.

This will be Inter’s 10th European final and they are full of confidence.
