Euro 2024: Germany Salvage Late Draw, Scotland Crash Out [Group A Round-up]

Actions in Euro 2024 Group A has been rounded up with Germany and Switzerland qualifying for the round of 16 while Scotland have crashed out.

After a terrific start to the campaign which saw Die Mannschaft demolish Scotland 5-1 in the opening match and defeat Hungary 2-0 in the second, they hit a death-knell against Switzerland in the final group game.

Switzerland defied the odds to take the lead in the first half through Dan Ndoye. And the goal as enough to force Germany into the break trailing. A win for Switzerland would have seen the side overtake the Germans on the top spot in the group.

They nearly got the job done, holding on to the lead until almost the last touch of the ball when Niclas Fullkrug finally came to Germany’s rescue. The Bundesliga forward scored a beautiful header in extra time to chalk off Switzerland’s lead and tie the game on a 1-1 draw.

Fullkrug’s equaliser came after the Germans have multiple appeals for a spot-kick turned down, including a disallowed goal. The draw means the hosts progress to the knockout as group winners with 7 points with the Swiss coming second with 5 points.

Scotland crash out of Euro 2024 with 1-0 loss to Hungary

In the other final Group A match, Scotland saw their Euro 2024 campaign come to an end following a narrow 1-0 loss to Hungary. After an opening defeat against Germany and a draw against Switzerland, The Tartan Army needed nothing less from victory to retain hopes of qualifying for the next round.

Hungary also came up worse in their opening two matches in the group – losing to Switzerland an Germany. They also needed victory to keep hopes of a knockout slot alive. It was a dragging encounter for both sides with a lot at stake.

The first half ended barren and the second nearly ended goalless as well before Kevin Csoboth scored at the last touch of the ball to hand Hungary a crucial victory.

The win has seen the Hungarians finish third in the group with 3 points and are now in contention to qualify for the knockout among the best four third-placed teams in the group stage.

Euro 2024 Group A Final standings and knockout bracket

Germany finished top of the group with 7 points after two wins and a draw followed by Switzerland with 5 points after a win and two draws. Hungary are third in the group with 3 points with two defeats and a win.

Based on UEFA knockout bracket for the competition, Germany will face the runners-up in Group B while Switzerland will face the runners-up in Group C. It cannot be determined yet whether Hungary will be seeded in the knockouts. Hungary’s knockout chances is dependent on the outcome of the final round of matches in the other groups.

Other fixtures

Action for the group stage final round of matches will continue in Group B with Spain taking on Albania while Italy will trade tackles with Croatia. Spain have qualified for the round of 16 after two wins while Italy will stand a chance to book a slot in the knockout even with a draw against Croatia.
