Euro 2020 team of the tournament: No Ronaldo

UEFA has released the Euro 2020 team of the tournament and the tournament’s highest goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo did not make it into the team.

The Euro 2020 team of the tournament which comprised 11 players, was selected by UEFA’s technical observer team. The technical observers comprised 16 former players and former or current coaches.

In the Euro 2020 team of the tournament, there are three England players – Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, and Harry Maguire. While Italy who beat England in the final to win the tournament has five players in the line-up – Gianluigi Donnarumma, Leonardo Bonucci, Leonardo Spinazzola, Jorginho, and Federico Chiesa.

Belgium whose journey ended in the quarter-final stage of the tournament had one player in the lineup – Romelu Lukaku, Spain had Pedri, while Denmark had Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the line-up.

  1. GK: Gigi Donnarumma (Italy)
Gigi Donnarumma.

Gigi Donnarumma who is on the verge of joining Paris Saint Germain won the player of the tournament despite being a goalkeeper. The 22-year-old Italian goalkeeper helped Italy to win the tournament by saving two penalties in the final. Aside from that, he kept three clean sheets in the tournament.

  1. RB: Kyle Walker (England)
Kyle Walker.

Manchester City’s right-back was a prominent figure in England’s defense throughout the tournament. The English right-back maintained his place throughout the tournament as he helped England to get to the final with his incredible recovery speed.

  1. LB: Leonardo Spinazzola (Italy)
Leonardo Spinazzola.

Though Leonardo Spinazzola missed the semi-finals and the finals of Euro 2020 due to an injury, his performance in the other games he was involved in made him one of the players in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament. The 28-year-old defender won two man-of-the-match awards in the group stage of the tournament.

  1. CB: Leonardo Bonucci (Italy)
Leonardo Bonucci.

Leonardo Bonucci partnered with Giorgio Chiellini in the central defensive role of the Italian team. The 34-year-old scored the equalizing goal in Euro 2020 final.

  1. CB: Harry Maguire (England)
Harry Maguire.

Though Harry Maguire did not play the opener due to fitness issues, he was able to return to the team and held his own until the final of the tournament. He didn’t fail to score his spot-kick in the final of the tournament.

  1. CM: Jorginho (Italy)
Jorginho.

It was a glorious year for Jorginho who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea before he joined Italy in the European Championship. Though he missed his spot-kick in the final, his contribution to the Italian team could not be ignored.

  1. CM: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Denmark)
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Though Denmark could not reach the final of Euro 2020, the performance of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was too good for him not to be among the players in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament. His effort helped Denmark to go as far as playing in the semi-finals of the tournament.

  1. CM: Pedri (Spain)
Pedri.

Pedri was the shining light in Spain’s team in Euro 2020. The Barcelona teenager played so well that he was named the best youngster in the tournament. His performance also earned him a place in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament.

  1. RW: Federico Chiesa (Italy)
Federico Chiesa.

Federico Chiesa was so good that he had to take the right-wing in Euro 2020 team of the tournament which should have gone to Cristiano Ronaldo. He scored two goals in 7 games in the tournament.

  1. CF: Romelu Lukaku (Italy)
Romelu Lukaku.

Romelu Lukaku was one of the brightest stars in Belgium’s team but he could not do much in the quarter-final stage of the tournament. The Inter Milan talisman scored four goals before he exited the tournament.

  1. LW: Raheem Sterling (England)
Raheem Sterling.

Raheem Sterling was the shining light in the English team despite being one of the most criticized players in the team before the tournament kicked off on June 11. The 26-year-old Manchester City forward went on to score three goals and provided an assist that helped England to make it to the final of the tournament.
