Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland returned from almost three weeks’ injury to continue his goalscoring display on Saturday, October 16, 2021. He scored two goals against Mainz to help Dortmund win 3-1.

The 21-year-old Norwegian striker who has been the brightest youngster in the world of football in the last two years last played for Dortmund on September 19, 2021, in a Bundesliga game against Union Berlin. He scored two goals in Dortmund’s 4-2 victory.

After the game, it was confirmed that Erling Haaland suffered a thigh injury which forced him to miss two Bundesliga games and one Champions League game.

Fortunately for Dortmund, the absence of Haaland did not inspire a defeat nor a draw. The team only scored fewer goals.

In the game against Mainz, Haaland took over the show after Marco Reus opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of the game. Haaland’s first goal came in the 54th minute from the spot.

Mainz tried to fight back until in the 87th minute when the club recorded their only goal via Jonathan Burkardt’s strike.

The 3-1 win temporarily took Borussia Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga above second-placed Bayern Munich that still have a game in hand. If Bayern beat Leverkusen later today at 14:30, Bayern will return to the top of the table.

After the game against Mainz, the captain of Dortmund, Marco Reus said Erling Haaland was missing in Dortmund’s team during the period he was injured.

“It is clear he had been missing in our team,” Marco Reus said. “It is important that he plays because he constantly keeps two or three players occupied.

“To score two goals on his comeback is top. That is why we signed him.”

Also, Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Jude Bellingham was filled with praises for Erling Haaland and talked about how hardworking the fast-rising football star has been.

He said: “I stand here every week and tell you how great he is. The only thing more I can say that the player that you see isn’t a fluke. He doesn’t just turn up after a week on the sun bed, and go out and play. He works his socks off every day to be a better striker. And he’s an even better guy than he is a striker!”
