The clubs with the most appearances at Wembley Stadium have been revealed, and it includes some shocking names when you gaze at their successes in the last decade.

Wembley Stadium is the Home of English Football, it is the largest sports venue in the United Kingdom with 90,000 seats, and the second largest in the whole of Europe.

Wembley Stadium, owned by the English Football Association, is located in the Borough of Brent in Northwestern London.

The Stadium is characterized by a 134-meter-high arch which makes it aesthetically pleasing in view.

It opened in 2007 on the site of the original Wembley Stadium which had existed from 1923-2003, and ever since then, many key events have been held at the ground including Champions League finals, Boxing bouts, and concerts.

Clubs with the most appearances at Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium, as earlier stated as the home of English Football, plays host to the England National Football Team, FA Cup semi-finals and finals, League Cup finals, and also play-offs across major English leagues.

Anyway, let’s get you in on this intriguing list. At the summit of the list is Tottenham Hotspur, and the reason they sit at the top of the log is that for over a season, they had to make use of Wembley stadium on rental basis, because their home Stadium was undergoing renovation.

Their appearance on the list also boosts the number of appearances for some Premier League teams.

Tottenham Hotspur have played at Wembley Stadium 59 times, far ahead of the second-placed team on the list.

Originally, they’d sit 6th on the list, but thanks to the fact that it was their home stadium for some time, they played extra 51 games at the venue.

Spurs would have played just 8 fixtures cumulatively at Wembley Stadium, but their tally as aforementioned has been improved by their use of Wembley for league games.

Chelsea are placed 2nd on the list

Second on the list is Chelsea, barring Spurs, they top the list with 33 appearances, an alluring tally for the Stamford Bridge side.

The Blues are a regular Wembley Candidate, and this simply means the London side have gone on to appear in more semifinals and finals.

Their last appearance at Wembley was in February 2024 in the Carabao Cup final which they lost to Liverpool.

They have another match to be played – the FA Cup semi-final, potentially two if they get to the final.

Two Manchester rivals in 3rd and 4th respectively

Manchester City come third on the list with 28 appearances, the Cityzens are having a speedy rise to the top of the list and could overtake Chelsea in just a matter of years.

The Cityzens could make it to 31 appearances if they go on to reach the FA Cup final and the UEFA Champions League final – where the final of the 2023/24 edition will also be played in Wembley.

Next on the list in 4th position is Manchester United with just 24 appearances. The Red Devils last played at Wembley in the 2022/23 season – an FA Cup final in which they lost 1-2 to Manchester City.

They also have a chance to take their tally higher in the FA Cup semi-final, and possibly if they get to the final.

Arsenal are fifth on the list with 18 appearances, and their most recent appearance was at the beginning of the 2020/21 season where they defeated Liverpool on penalties.

List is stacked with top-6 Premier League teams

The list as expected is jam-packed with the traditional top-six English teams, and next up in 6th is Liverpool with 14 appearances.

Their most recent appearance came when they defeated Chelsea by 1-0 in this season’s Carabao Cup final.

In seventh and eighth positions are no other than Aston Villa and Portsmouth respectively, with seven appearances each.

Aston Villa’s last appearance came in the 2020 Carabao Cup final where they lost 2-1 to Manchester City.

Portsmouth’s last appearance came in the 2018/19 EFL trophy final against Sunderland.

Occupying the bottom of the 10-club list are Leicester City and Watford who sit ninth and tenth respectively.

Leicester City clinched its first FA Cup title in 2021 when they defeated Chelsea at Wembley.

Watford on the other hand were woeful in their last appearance, losing 6-0 to Manchester City in the 2019 FA Cup final.

Clubs that have never played at Wembley stadium

Fun Fact: Among the 92 major Clubs in English Football. Only five teams have never played at Wembley Stadium.

They include Accrington Stanley, Colchester, Crawley, Blackburn Rovers, and Ipswich Town.

Fortunes could change for Ipswich Town this season though, as they seem in contention for the Championship play-offs.
