The interim manager of Manchester United, Ralf Rangnick has described the 4-0 defeat his team suffered at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday, April 19, as embarrassing, adding that Liverpool are now six years ahead of United.

The 63-year-old German tactician stressed that things have gotten so bad at the club that the club need to rebuild with a maximum of ten players starting from this coming summer transfer window.

However, Rangnick noted that there should be a decision on how the team wants to play before the potential players are brought to Old Trafford.

On Tuesday, just like in most parts of the 2021-2022 season, Manchester United showed how unsettled they have been when they visited Anfield Stadium for their 33rd league game of the season.

Unfortunately, the inconsistent side were without their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo who lost one of his twins during birth about 24 hours before the kick of the game.

Unfortunately again, United were without two of their midfielders, Fred and Scott McTominay who are battling different degrees of injuries. Also, in the first 10 minutes of the game, Paul Pogba sustained an injury that forced coach Ralf Rangnick to substitute him with a more attacking midfielder player, Jesse Lingard.

Hence, the midfield and defense of Rangnick’s team were totally open and Liverpool had it easy to move around on the turf.

To make things worst for Manchester United, they conceded a 5th-minute goal which put more pressure on the team. Two minutes after Luis Daiz’s opener, the match paused in the 7th minute to pay tribute to Ronaldo over the loss of his son during birth.

After the tribute, Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead to make the game more difficult for their visitors. The first half ended 2-0 in favor of the hosts.

In the second half, coach Jurgen Klopp and his boys continue to teach coach Ralf Rangnick the advanced style of counter-pressing which Rangnick invented in Germany. Before the 68th minute, Sadio Mane had made it 3-0 for the hosts.

After Mane’s goal, Liverpool players continue to press Manchester United until the pressure on them led to the fourth goal of the match courtesy of Salah in the 85th minute.

Liverpool played Manchester United so well that the hosts recorded 72 percent of the ball possession, and had 14 shots, five of which were on target. While United managed just 28 percent of the ball possession with 2 shots, one of which was on target.

After the 4-0 bashing, coach Ralf Rangnick told reporters during the post-match press conference that “it is extremely embarrassing” for him as a coach of Manchester United “to have press conferences like this one”.

“It’s embarrassing, it’s disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” said Rangnick. “We have to accept Liverpool are six years ahead of us now.

“When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.”

The 4-0 bashing at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday, means that Jurgen Klopp and his team have defeated Manchester United home and away this season. Cumulatively, Liverpool scored a record 9 goals against United this season.

Erik ten Hag’s assignment at United will be to rebuild according to Ralf Rangnick

The incoming coach of Manchester United Erik ten Hag.

At the end of the 2021-2022 season, coach Ralf Rangnick is expected to step down as the interim coach of Manchester United. The German tactician is expected to take up an advisory role at the club for two years.

In his place, the current coach of Ajax, Erik ten Hag, is expected to come in. Ahead of Ten Hag’s arrival, coach Rangnick confirm that there would be a rebuild at Manchester United.

“There will be a rebuild for sure but that does not help us when we still have five games to play,” said Rangnick.

“If you analyze the situation it is not difficult to analyze. For me, it is clear there will be six, seven, eight, maybe ten new players. Before you sign those players you need to be aware of how you want to play.”

The 4-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool has left Manchester United on the 6th spot with 54 points in 33 games, three points below 4th placed Tottenham Hotspur which have a game in hand.

Despite having 5th placed Arsenal and 4th placed Tottenham to contend with in the race for a top-four finish, coach Ralf Rangnick believes it is not over for Manchester United this season.

“I don’t think we have checked out, they are just better than us,” he said after the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday. “They have 25 Formula One racing cars in their squad.

“I don’t think it makes sense to speculate about our chances of making the top four after a performance like today.”
