Borussia Dortmund interim coach, Edin Terzic, has stressed that he would demand that the Bundesliga club records more goals under his tutelage.

The 38-year-old German tactician took over from Lucien Favre who was sacked during the weekend after the club’s 5-1 league defeat at home to lowly rated Stuttgart on Saturday.

Edin Terzic is expected to improve the fortunes of Borussia Dortmund that is currently struggling in the German Bundesliga where they have suffered 4 league defeats, a draw, and they have enjoyed 6 wins in 11 league games so far this season. They are currently occupying the 5th spot on the league table with 19 points, 6 points below first placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Though Lucien Favre struggled with Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga, he had a great time in the UEFA Champions League group stage before he was sacked. He led the German club to win 4 Champions League games, suffered just a defeat and a draw. Borussia Dortmund qualified for the next round of the competition as the leader of Champions League group F.

From all available statistics, Favre was not just fired for losing games, he was fired for the number of goals Dortmund has been conceding especially in the league this season. For instance, before he was sacked, Dortmund had conceded 15 goals in 11 league matches.

Despite this poor stat, the club is known for scoring high numbers of goals as the club has scored 23 league goals so far this season, the same number of goals as first placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Dortmund’s interim coach Edin Terzic who has been an assistant coach at Dortmund since 2018, intends to improve on the goalscoring aspect of the club rather than the defensive side of it.

“I’m a product of Borussia Dortmund. I come from the region and have been a fan for ages,” said Edin Terzic on his first press conference as the caretaker manager of Dortmund. “I’ve been working here for 10 years now and I’m shaped by the past.

“There are two ways you can win a football game: you can concede fewer goals, or you can always try to score one more. I’m more for the latter.”

On how he accepted the challenge to coach Borussia Dortmund in the absence of his former boss, Terzic said: “The night was short. I had to think about it because I was part of the coaching team and had to take responsibility for what happened on Saturday.

“I sat down with my family and thought about it. I concluded that I would accept the assignment.

“I’m only human and I have emotions. The defeat hurt and I’ve spent more time with Lucien in the last two and a half years than with my family.

“It’s not nice to see the decision that was taken, but this is football. The players need to have faith and courage and remember we have done a lot of good things together.”

Edin Terzic’s first assignment is to lead Borussia Dortmund to play against Werder Bremen on Tuesday, December 15 at 20:30. A win in the match could take Dortmund closer to the current league leaders.
