Borussia Dortmund have discontinued their relationship with manager Edin Terzic after the German tactician asked the club “to terminate his contract with immediate effect”.

Dortmund made it to the UEFA Champions League final during the 2023/24 season under the tutelage of Terzic before ultimately losing to Real Madrid at Wembley on June 1, 2024.

Borussia Dortmund have indicated that they acceded to Edin Terzic’s request following “a joint discussion”.

Edin Terzic On His Decision To Leave Borussia Dortmund

Informing the fans of his decision to resign, Terzic expressed that it was a “very difficult” one for him to take.

He said: “After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.

“Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions my fundamental feeling has not changed.”

The 41-year-old wished Borussia Dortmund all the best for the future and thanked them for their contributions to his career.

Edin Terzic added: “I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon.”

Terzic started his coaching career handling the academy team of Borussia Dortmund between 2010 and 2013 before he became the assistant to Slaven Bilic at Turkish side Besiktas.

Edin Terzic accompanied Bilic to English side West Ham United in 2015 before exiting the team after the Croatian was dismissed in November 2017.

The German returned to Borussia Dortmund as Lucien Favre’s assistant in 2018, before becoming interim boss of the side after the dismissal of the Swiss man in December 2020.

Terzic Led Borussia Dortmund To DFB-Pokal Glory

Terzic was named caretaker manager of the Black and Yellows until the end of the 2020/21 season and he led the club to win the DFB-POKAL, defeating RB Leipzig in the final.

Edin Terzic then had a spell as the German club’s technical director before he was appointed as manager of the side in 2022.

Borussia Dortmund concluded the 2022/23 Bundesliga season as runners-up, losing out on the title after capitulating at the dying embers of the campaign.

Terzic afterward led the Black and Yellows to a fifth-place finish in 2023/24, which was sufficient to secure UEFA Champions League football for the side due to the added slots handed to German and Italian teams for the coming season due to their exploits in Europe last term.

Moreover, Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke was full of praise for Edin Terzic, expressing that the 41-year-old has “done an outstanding job in his time at Borussia Dortmund”.

Watzke said: “Edin Terzic has done an outstanding job in his time at BVB, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude

“Edin and I will always remain friends.”
