Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has been axed out of Brazil’s squad for 2024 Copa America.
We reported earlier that Brazil head coach Dorivial Junior has named his 23-man squad for 2024 Copa America which kicks off in June 2024 with Ederson making the list of goalkeepers called up for the tournament.
The 30-year-old, who has won 25 caps with the Selecao since making his debut in 2017, was set to for another major international tournament with the team before suffering a ghastly injury in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the just-concluded 2023/24 Premier League matchday 37 fixture.
City confirmed Ederson has been ruled out of the rest of the season following the injury. He missed the club’s title-deciding clash with West Ham United on the final day and was also ruled out of the FA Cup final showdown with Manchester United on May 25.
However, he was expected to recover early and link up with the Brazil squad for the 2024 Copa America after being named in the squad.
Now, a report shared by Fabrizio Romano has confirmed he will miss the tournament with Sao Paulo goalkeeper, Raphael, named as his replacement,
The move to replace Ederson has been linked to projections he may not recover in time from the eye socket injury to join the squad.
The Manchester City goalkeeper won the 2019 Copa America with the national team and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in the 2021 edition.
Ederson took to his social media handle to post a cryptic message after the injury. Sharing footage of the injury incident, the prolific stopper left his fans at a loss as he wrote, “No one understands but me. See you soon,” closing it with a thumbs-up emoji.
Despite the injury setback, Ederson ended his seventh season with Manchester City with his sixth Premier League title as City saw off West Ham United to clinch the English top-flight.
He will hope to recover and return to the City squad ahead of next campaign.
