Die-hard Ipswich Town supporter and renowned popstar Ed Sheeran is now a shareholder at the club. The English songwriter and singer has reportedly bought a stake in the Ipswich-based outfit following their promotion to the Premier League.
Ipswich Town confirmed the development on the club’s website, announcing that the 33-year-old has bought 1.4% of the club’s shares.
Further details of the transaction revealed Sheeran will not play an active role at the club following the investment as he will not be a part of the club’s board of directors. However, it will bring the celebrity lifelong fan closer to the dealings of the club. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
Sheeran also confirmed the investment, expressing his joy to have acquired a small percentage of the club.
“I am really excited to have bought a small percentage of my hometown football club. It’s any football fan’s dream to be an owner of the club they support, and I feel so grateful for this opportunity,” he said.
The investment caps Ed Sheeran’s lifelong bromance with the club. He has been a die-hard supporter since he was a child, frequently gracing the stands at Portland Road to watch their matches.
In 2021, he signed a deal with the club to sponsor their shirt. The deal has reportedly been renewed each year since then.
Ed Sheeran’s investment is expected to boost Ipswich Town’s financial base as they head into their first Premier League campaign in 22 years. They will take on Liverpool at home in their opening fixture on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
