A dramatic scene unfolded at Barcelona’s iconic Spotify Camp Nou stadium, currently undergoing a massive transformation as part of the Espai Barça project.

MARCA reported that approximately 20 workers were involved in a dispute over a discrepancy, which escalated into a physical altercation around 2:30 pm on Friday, October 11, 2024, and became violent.

What Caused The Fight At Camp Nou?

The dispute among 20 workers escalated into violence with some individuals using sticks, leading to injuries.

Meanwhile, the cause of the altercation is unclear, but all 20 workers involved in the fight were subsequently terminated by the construction manager, though none of them were identified.

Camp Nou Construction Update

The ambitious project has created 5,700 employment contracts, with approximately 1,750 workers actively involved in the construction process.

The scope of the project spans an impressive 222,000 square meters, encompassing not only the stadium but also surrounding facilities.

The Espai Barca project comes with a hefty price tag of €1.45 billion, underscoring Barcelona’s commitment to creating a world-class sports and entertainment complex.

The ongoing renovation aims to revolutionize the Camp Nou experience, incorporating cutting-edge amenities and infrastructure.

Once completed, the revamped stadium will solidify Barcelona’s position as a global football powerhouse.

When Will The Camp Nou Construction Be Completed?

According to reports, the revised target date for Barcelona’s return to Camp Nou has been pushed back to March 2025, from the previously anticipated February 2025.

Several members of Laporta’s Board are still hoping to make a return in December, but those in charge believe it will be more feasible for them to do so in February or March 2025.

In anticipation of this, the Catalan club has requested BSM, the company overseeing the Olympic Stadium, to extend their contract until March 31.

Upon reopening, the newly-built Camp Nou will initially have a reduced capacity of up to 65,000 spectators.

This is because renovations will continue until 2026, impacting the stadium’s full capacity.

Furthermore, the Espai Barça project, which includes the stadium’s renovation, is expected to be fully completed by 2026.

Overall, the full transition is scheduled for the 2026/27 season.

Until then, fans will have to adjust to a partially renovated stadium.

Meanwhile, the delay has disappointed fans who are eager to see their beloved club return to their historic home. Barcelona’s management will likely face pressure to ensure the project stays on track.

What’s next for Barcelona?

Barcelona sit atop the La Liga table, holding a three-point advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid after nine matches.

Following the international break, Barcelona return to action with a crucial La Liga match against Sevilla on Sunday, October 20, at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

The Catalan giants recognize the importance of securing three points against Sevilla, maintaining their lead and momentum in the title race.

However, Sevilla, seeking to revive their season, will pose a formidable challenge to Barcelona’s dominance. The Andalusian side will aim to spoil Barcelona’s party and reignite their title aspirations.
