Donny van de Beek of Manchester United will not be playing in the 2022 Qatar World Cup later this year as coach Louis van Gaal dropped the midfielder.
The playmaker has only played 19 minutes of football this season and is now recovering from an injury that has kept him out for nearly six weeks.
He has not yet experienced the comeback that many anticipated under United’s coach Erik ten Hag following his disastrous runs under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
He last played for the Netherlands national team in March 2021, and his disfavor has caused a 19-month absence.
Van van Beek has now been dealt another significant tournament setback after being left out of the Euro 2020 squad for the postponed competition last year.
It represents a tragic decline for the 25-year-old player, who was a prominent for his nation after his success at Ajax under Ten Hag in the 2018–19 campaign.
Both Frenkie de Jong and Tyrell Malacia, a Reds target, have made the cut.
Interestingly, Memphis Depay and Daley Blind are on the list, along with Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool, Nathan Ake of Manchester City, and Sven Botman of Newcastle.
United-linked Jurrien Timber, who Van Gaal warned might not make the final squad if he transferred to Old Trafford and saw less playing time, Cody Gakpo, Denzel Dumfries, and Jeremie Frimpong have been named.
Other notable names include the duo of Matthijs de Ligt and Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich, Pascal Struijk from Leeds, and Steven Bergwijn from Ajax.
