The Netherlands national team has received another big blow ahead of the forthcoming European Championship (Euro 2020) as the team’s central midfielder, Donny van de Beek will not be able to participate in the competition.

The 24-year-old Manchester United midfielder was ruled out of the competition due to an injury which status was not known at the time of publishing this report.

“Van de Beek has to let the European Championship pass by. The midfielder is struggling with an injury”, a tweet from the Netherlands national team Twitter page read.

Aside from the statement from the national team that announced that Donny van de Beek would not be fit enough for the competition, the head coach of the team, Frank de Boer said he won’t invite a replacement for the midfielder.

Donny van de Beek’s injury came less than four days to the commencement of the European Championship. He is the second top football star in the Dutch national team that had to miss the competition due to an injury.

Earlier in the year, one of the most important players of the national team, Virgil van Dijk had to rule himself out of the European Championship due to a knee injury he sustained last summer.

Just like Van Dijk, Donny van de Beek would have to support the Netherlands national team from home while he strives to be fit ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

Recall that Donny joined Manchester United from Ajax last summer for a transfer fee worth £35 million. Since then, he has managed to make 36 appearances in all competitions in which he scored a goal and provided 2 assists.

He was expected to be instrumental in helping the Netherlands to execute the games in Group C and subsequent stages of the competition. The group includes the Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria, and North Macedonia.

When it was announced that Donny van de Beek would miss the European Championship, his teammate at Manchester United, Marcus Rashford, was the first to wish him well. The England international took to Twitter and wrote: “Sorry mate, take some time for yourself and keep your head high.”

At the time of publishing this report, Donny has left the camp of the Dutch team but it has not been ascertained whether he flew back to Manchester or returned home to the Netherlands.

It will be interesting to see how the Netherlands would cope with compact teams like France, England, Portugal, Germany, and Belgium which the competition kick-off on June 11.
