Spanish La Liga club Elche which just gained promotion to the elite league want to make Argentina football legend Diego Maradona the new manager of the club.

The Spanish club failed to renew the contract of Jose Rojo Pacheta, the football manager who helped the club to gain promotion to La Liga in the just concluded 2019-2020 season when his contract with the club expired this summer. Before the expiration of his contract, Rojo led the club to earn promotion after defeating both Real Zaragoza and Girona in the Segunda play-offs.

In a statement Elche issued earlier in the week when the coach left the club, the club stated the unprecedented achievement of the 52-year-old Spanish tactician but failed to reveal why the club failed to renew his contract.

Some of the excellent achievements of the retired Spanish footballer turned football manager are: he led Elche to gain promotion to division B and also helped the club to gain promotion to La Liga within the space of three seasons at the club. Pacheta who joined the Spanish club in February 2018 achieved this feat at the club despite the fact that Elche have been the 5th club with the lowest budget in division B.

“The coach and the club are going their separate ways, ending a glorious and triumphant cycle which will go down in the memory of our fans forever,” Elche said in a statement.

Though the club’s former manager performed magic at the club, fate performed a great role because the club that was supposed to qualify for the playoffs had to step down because 28 of their playing and non-playing staff tested positive for COVID-19.

A 1-0 win against Girona in the Segunda play-offs on Sunday was enough to scale Elche through to the apex football league in Spain. Their promotion to the apex league has increased the desire of the new owner of the club, Christian Bragarnik, to invest more in the club.

One of the areas Bragarnik want to start investing in the club ahead of the 2020-2021 season is to bring Diego Maradona to the club as the club’s new manager.

This will be done through a super football agent, Jorge Mendes as the super-agent would reportedly try to establish a link between the club and Maradona. Reports from Spain said Mendes could use his influence to make the deal possible.

Though Maradona is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, the same can not be said about his managerial career. He failed to do much with the eight teams he had the opportunity to coach including Argentina national team and Mexican professional football club Dorados de Sinaloa. The 59-year-old Argentine tactician is currently managing Gimnasia de La Plata in Argentina.
