David de Gea has rejected the opportunity to join Inter Milan as a potential successor to Andre Onana who has replaced him at Manchester United.

Manchester United finally announced the acquisition of Andre Onana after weeks of reports on a five-year deal that will run through the summer of 2028.

On Thursday, 20th of July, the Cameroonian International joined the English Premier League club in a deal reportedly worth 45 million pounds with 5 million in add-ons with an option to extend for one more year.

The last season’s Champions League finalist goalkeeper replaced the former Man United shot-stopper De Gea after the Spaniard announced his departure from Old Trafford on the 1st of July.

What happened between David de Gea and Manchester United?

Manchester United let go of the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper after the 20 times Premier League-winning club made a U-turn on his contract extension.

De Gea announced his departure from the Red Devils after 12 years of dedicated service. He was with the English club for most of his career.

However, several series of high-profile errors and error-laden performances ultimately assured Erik ten Hag to offload the 31-year-old former United No. 1 and go after Onana in his place.

The current Carabao Cup winner made 545 appearances for the English powerhouse across all competitions, keeping 190 clean sheets (the most in the club’s decorated history).

Eight major trophies, including a league title and the Europa League, were won by De Gea during his 12-year stay in England.

Following the goalkeeper Manchester United’s departure Inter Milan contacted the Spaniard to replace Onana who replaced him at United.

According to reports, De Gea has rejected the chance to move to the Italian club.

The Italian powerhouse reportedly offered the goalkeeper a salary worth 5 million euros but he’s holding out closer to 10 million euros, which would correlate to a wage of €255,000 per week.

His United contract was worth more than €60 million over four years with bonuses, so if De Gea wants to remain one of the highest-paid goalkeepers in the game, he may find that Saudi Arabia is the only destination that can meet his demands.

David de Gea has been linked with a move to the Middle East after he left Manchester United, a deal reportedly worth 280,000 euros per week.

According to football insiders, Inter Milan are already looking to replace Andre Onana with agreements for goalkeepers Anatoliy Trubin of Shakhtar Donetsk and Yann Sommer of Bayern Munich already in place.

The shot-stopper would like to play in La Liga again, where he previously played for Atletico Madrid, but whether or not a team can afford his salary is still unknown.

Instead, the former Manchester United goalkeeper wants to make a surprising move to La Liga.

Atletico Madrid, where De Gea played as a teenager, reportedly plans to sell goalkeeper Jan Oblak, opening the door for his return.

However, he would once again be forced to accept a salary that fell short of what he had earned at United.

For Atletico, the 32-year-old made 84 appearances before joining United in 2011.

If De Gea doesn’t find a new team before the 2023-24 season, he may remain jobless untill January transfer window or probably for the rest of the season. And that could force him to retire from professional football.
