David De Gea may still likely keep his place as Manchester United goalkeeper as his contract with the club expires today.
The longest-serving Manchester United player came to the end of his 12 years at Manchester United on June 30. David De Gea’s Manchester United future was a subject of speculations as Erik Ten Hag took over as Manchester United.
However, the former Ajax boss drown speculations when he stated David De Gea is still important in the squad and he want the Spaniard to renew his contract.
Ironically, Erik Ten Hag upbeat tone on David De Gea did not translate into the negotiation table for a new contract for the player.
David De Gea vs Manchester United contract faceoff
Manchester United tabled a contract renewal proposal with a drastically reduced wage offer from De Gea’s £375,000 weekly wage.
The two parties entered a dragging round of renewal talks with the reduced wage offer driving a wedge between De Gea and the club.
According to initial reports, De Gea refused to sign the new offer due to the cut wage offer. However, Futballnews understands David De Gea later signed the contract but Manchester United decided to take a rather shocking move on the deal.
The Red Devils refused to sign off the deal but instead withdrew the offer and came back with a new proposal with a more reduced paycheck.
While the impasse over the new contract proposal lingers, the clock was ticking on De Gea’s contract duration with the Spaniard finally running out of contract without a new deal in place.
Now, Manchester United have confirmed they are still in talks with De Gea to renew his deal after he ran out of contract.
A statement on the club’s website reads;
“David De Gea contract is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving goalkeeper.”
Why the impasse on David De Gea contract?
Manchester United wants to renew David De Gea’s contract but it is pretty obvious De Gea’s fortunes in Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United squad plan is dwindling.
De Gea is a top goalie, but he seems to have fallen off the pecking order in Ten Hag’s deep press system which requires a more confident and athletic goalie with precision and creativity to distribute passes to defenders and also plays out from goal.
De Gea has been found wanting in Ten Hag’s deep press but his experience is still what the Dutch tactician still counts on hence the call for a renewed contract but on significantly reduced wage.
Manchester United interested in Andre Onana as David De Gea’s replacement
While the contract renewal deadlock with De Gea lingers, Manchester United are already in talks with Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to sign the player this summer.
Inter Milan have confirmed Manchester United are interested in Onana but are yet to enter into direct talks with the club. Manchester United will hope to agree personal terms with Onana and then move on to direct talks with Inter Milan soon.
Erik Ten Hag and Andre Onana worked together at Ajax before they left the club at the same time last summer. Ten Hag sees Onana as David De Gea’s best replacement and a good buffer should the contract deadlock with the Spaniard continues.
Saudi sources have revealed Saudi clubs are monitoring the David De Gea’s Manchester United contract faceoff and may likely make a move for the player on the coming days.
