Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has blamed himself for Manchester United’s disappointing result with Brentford. Manchester United was thrashed 4-0 by their hosts on Matchday 2 of the 2022-2023 Premier League.
It was another disappointing game for Manchester United on the second matchday of the 2022-2023 English Premier League. Manchester United was once again thumped 4-0 by Brentford; all goals scored in the first half of the game.
This is Manchester’s worst performance so far in the Premier League, conceding four dramatic and quick first-half goals against a newly promoted and lowly-rated side. The home needed 35 minutes, not the regular 90 minutes, to put the game beyond a rickety Manchester United squad.
The first goal, which came in the 10th minute into the first half, was a bomb! As de Gea was the main culprit. Cristiano Ronaldo was dispossessed in the midfield. Josh Dasilva got the ball and fired straight from outside the box at the goal. David De Gea crumpled on the ground, taking a feeble hold of the ball before allowing it to roll into the goal.
It was another blunder from the Spanish goalkeeper in the 20th minute. This time, Christian Eriksen was complicit. De Gea passed the ball to Christian Eriksen, who was quickly dispossessed by Mathew Jensen. Jensen rolled the ball into the net to make it 2-0 for the hosts within 10 minutes from the first goal.
The third goal was from a corner kick. It was well taken by the host. A shambolic Man United’s defense was too loose and weak to contain it. Mee headed right into the back post to make it 3-0 for the hosts. Manchester United was lost in the game as Brentford continued to pound.
Mbeuno finished off the rout with a 37th-minute strike after a perfect counter-attack, taking the scores to an astonishing 4-0 against Manchester United.
Manchester United were smashed to smithereens. It was a complete rout and a nightmare for the Ten Hag-led team.
Addressing the press after the match, De Gea blamed himself for Manchester United’s shocking 4-0 defeat by Brentford. De Gea has obviously pulled a gaffe that saw Brentford swing into a surprise 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game.
“I cost three points to my team today, to be honest”, the goalkeeper admitted.
“It was a poor performance from myself. After the first mistake and the second, it was very tough for the team to get playing. It was a horrible day.”
De Gea emerged as Manchester United Player of the season in the 2021-2022 Premier League season. The 2022-2023 Premier League might not be the best of seasons for the Spaniard, who has conceded 6 goals in two matches already.
Currently, the Red Devils are at the bottom of the Premier League table after two games. Erik Ten Hag has to do more to avert the deepening crisis in the team as impatient United fans brace for more protests.
