Danny Ings has refused to sign a four-year contract extension with Southampton amidst transfer speculations surrounding him this summer.

The current contract of the 28-year-old English center-forward will expire on June 30, 2022. Hence, Southampton tried to offer him a contract extension that would tie him down to the club a bit longer to avoid interest from other clubs.

According to reports, the four-year deal would have made Danny Ings the highest-paid player at the Premier League club but the club’s fans received a big shock when their talisman turned down the club’s offer.

Danny Ings became a household name in English football in the 2019-2020 season in which he scored 25 goals in 45 competitions for Southampton. In the 2020-2021 season, the forward could not match up with his performance the previous season. Yet, he was able to score 13 goals in 33 games in all competitions before the season ended.

Despite such an effort, the head coach of England’s national team, Gareth Southgate did not deem him fit enough to be a part of the 2020 European Championship.

Ings made his debut for England senior team on 12 October 2015. Since then, the 28-year-old striker has managed to make just three appearances in which he scored a goal.

Despite such a poor stat in the national team squad, the football star believes that he is one of the elites football stars in England and desires to play for a top club that can offer him the opportunity of winning a major club title.

Top clubs like Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City have reportedly shown interest in the striker but nothing concrete yet. However, the fact that he turned down a 4-year contract extension Southampton offered ahead of the new season showed that he could jump ship once the right opportunity comes.

Danny Ings has been at Southampton since August 9, 2018, first on loan from Liverpool before he made his deal with the Premier League club permanent on July 1, 2019, for a transfer fee worth, €22.20 million.

He is now worth about €22 million in the transfer market which is a good price to attract any club to go for him but it would be difficult for Southampton to let him go this summer.

If they fail to allow Ings to leave the club this summer or in winter, they may lose the player to another club for free in the summer of 2022.
