After Brentford thrashed Manchester United on Saturday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared helpless and a post of Dani Alves mocking him went viral.
The 37-year-old Portuguese football icon has been a contentious issue all summer, as he is eager to move on from Old Trafford once more.
Ronaldo made it plain that he intended to quit the club after United failed to advance to the Champions League because he wanted to participate in the elite tournament.
In a photo posted to his Instagram account, former Barcelona right-back Dani Alves made fun of Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
The seasoned Brazilian defender left Barcelona for UNAM in Liga MX this summer, his second departure from the club.
During his career at the Nou Camp, he made 405 appearances and contributed 104 assists along with 22 goals.
At the height of his career, he faced Ronaldo when Real Madrid and Barcelona squared off in the El Clasico.
While at the Santiago Bernabeu, former Madrid player Ronaldo with the Brazilian Alves developed a captivating rivalry.
The two renowned athletes competed against each other not just for their clubs but also for their national teams.
Before Brentford thrashed Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United 4-0 on Saturday, Alves took to his Instagram page to post a throw-back picture of himself and Ronaldo during an international game which looks like he is mocking the five times Ballon d’Or winner.
In the caption, the Brazilian defender wrote: “When we were buddies!! Come over here, my little buddy”.
Alves surpasses the former Galactico in one area, despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s claim to be one of the greatest players in history.
The Brazilian is the most decorated player in football history, not just in the history of Barcelona. Ronaldo has 30 trophies under his belt, whereas Alves has 43.
With Alves entering the Mexican league, the two are unlikely to ever play one another again at the club level.
The right-back is still in the running to represent Brazil in the FIFA World Cup in 2022, which will likely be the final international competition for both him and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The current Manchester United striker is 37 years old, while the former Barcelona star is now 39.
The rivalry between Alves and Cristiano Ronaldo produced several legendary moments during El Clasico games over the years.
The Portuguese star looked to throw an elbow at the Brazilian right-back who had grabbed hold of him during Barca’s 4-0 thrashing of Madrid in 2015 at the Bernabeu. Alves was given a warning by the referee, but Ronaldo escaped punishment.
Following their altercation, things between the two didn’t get any better as the former Los Blancos star reportedly ignored the seasoned defender at the 2015 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
It happened after Alves made remarks that seemed to annoy Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, by implying that the player was a victim of his success.
After some time, the Brazilian clarified his assessment of the United star, saying: “When I said he always wanted the spotlight, that when you win, you’ll be the star, but when you lose, they’ll go for you, I said it respectfully.”
