Just before the hour mark, following a United attack, the two got into a physical altercation as a routine jockeying for position developed into a wrestling contest on the penalty spot.

After receiving a yellow card apiece, the two were eventually separated by players from both sides. The VAR checked the situation for red cards, but nothing was done.

Players competed for the best position in the penalty areas ahead of a potential cross as Aston Villa led 3-1 and United’s youngster Alejandro Garnacho carried the ball forward on the right.

Both Mings and Ronaldo appeared to grip onto each other at the same time, refusing to let go.

When the ball was out of play, the players continued to wrestle while focusing on one another. Mings then fell to the ground with Ronaldo still connected.

Before a violent argument started that resulted in a scrum of players being ran over, Lucas Digne and Douglas Luiz were the first players to arrive to assist separate matters.

Both players were happy to see a yellow card rather than a red one when referee Anthony Taylor displayed it to them after the incident had subsided following a VAR review.

In Unai Emery’s first game as manager since succeeding Steven Gerrard, Villa defeated United 3-1, handing them their first league loss in six games.

After goals from Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne, the Midlands team quickly took a 2-0 lead. However, a Jacob Ramsey own goal cut the margin in half shortly before halftime.

But early in the second half, Ramsey made it 3-1, and Villa finished the game to get the much-needed three points.

Ronaldo led United despite making it known that he wanted to quit the team and stirring up controversy by refusing to use a substitute during the team’s victory over Tottenham in October.
