Cristiano Ronaldo became the first footballer in the history of football to be awarded cryptocurrency which is gradually becoming a means of transaction between fans and clubs across the world.

The 36-year-old Portuguese football star was given the digital currency ahead of the Juventus league game against Benevento on Sunday, March 21. The fans gave the 5 time Ballon d’Or winner 770 Fan Tokens $JUV to celebrate the footballer for being the player with the highest number of career goals in the history of football.

Fans of Juventus use the $JUV as means to interact with the Italian club and also gives them access to make some critical decisions at the club via Socios online platform.

Juventus fans are not the only group of fans that have keyed into the digital currency, it was reported that fans of clubs like Manchester City, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain also use cryptocurrency via Chiliz’s platform.

According to reports, there are over 24 clubs across the world that are already on Chiliz’s platform which is reportedly worth over 400 million dollars.

Unfortunately for Juventus’ fans, the cryptocurrency award they gave to Cristiano Ronaldo could not stop Benevento from stunning their club at home. The league game ended 0-1 in favor of the visitors.

After the game, Juventus maintained their 3rd spot on the league table with 55 points in 27 games. They are now 10 points away from first-placed Inter Milan and four points away from second-placed AC Milan.

Meanwhile, the managing director of Juventus Fabio Paratici has insisted that the club is not planning to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club anytime soon.

Recall that Paratici recently said that the club was not planning to allow the 36-year-old Portuguese star to leave Juventus which means that Ronaldo might be offered a new contract at the club before his current contract with the club expires in June 2022.

After the club’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Benevento on Sunday, Paratici stressed that Juventus have decided to keep the 5 time Ballon d’Or winner at the club.

He said: “We’ve decided to keep Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s the best player in the world and we are holding on tight.

“We have a project that we started from last season, one game will not change our views or our strategy. This line continues and we are very happy with what we’ve done, so we’ll continue working to improve.”
