Manchester United have announced that Cristiano Ronaldo will return to the Premier League club this summer. The Red Devils have reached an agreement with Italian side Juventus for the services of the Portuguese football icon.
Cristiano Ronaldo still has less than a season left on his contract with Juventus but has made it clear that he is no longer interested in playing for the Italian Serie A club.
The 36-year-old Portuguese football icon showed up at Juventus training center earlier today, August 27, 2021, to empty his locker and also said his bye to his teammates at the Italian club.
Afterward, he was seen boarding a plane in Turin, Italy, and has landed in Lisbon, Portugal while he awaits the outcome of his agent, Jorge Mendes’ negotiations with Manchester United.
Ronaldo’s coach at Juventus, Max Allegri told the press earlier today that he was not disappointed that Ronaldo decided to quit the club with a season left on his contract.
“I’m not disappointed by Cristiano Ronaldo”, the veteran coach said. “He wants to leave Juventus and he made a choice, he’s gonna look for a new club after three years here. It’s part of the life”.
Before now, it was looking like Ronaldo was set to join Manchester United‘s local rivals Manchester City. The reigning Premier League club had agreed to offer Ronaldo a two-year deal and had also agreed to pay him €15 million per year.
But City reportedly pulled out of the negotiation at the last minute because Juventus insisted that they must get at least €25 million from the transfer deal which Manchester City were not ready to pay.
Hours later, the table turned to Manchester United and the Premier League giants were able to tidy up the deal with Juventus that they have already announced his potential arrival at Old Trafford.
Confirming the news, an official United statement read: “Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached an agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical.
“Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.”

Welcome back home @Cristiano 🙌🐐 https://t.co/YoFBamTIAQ
The current Manchester United coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “I didn’t think Cristiano was going to leave Juventus. It has been speculation this morning and the last few days of course.
“We have always had good communication. I know Bruno [Fernandes] has been talking to him as well. He knows what we feel about him and if he was ever going to move away from Juventus he knows we are here…
“I was fortunate enough to play with him, I coached him when I got my job (as reserve team manager at United).
“Such a tremendous human being so let’s see what happens with Cristiano. Everyone who has played with him I think has a soft spot for him.”
