He began his career with Vitória, played for three years in Japan, and then spent several seasons with Porto in Portugal, where he won eleven titles, including the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League and three national championships.

Once, he was named the league’s leading scorer. Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Russian Premier League paid €60 million for his services in 2012, where he won all three domestic awards and twice shared the competition’s best player and top scorer honors.

For an Asian record sum of €58.6 million, he was traded to Shanghai SIPG in 2016.

In addition to participating for Brazil at the 2012 Summer Olympics as one of the three allowed overage players, Hulk made his international debut in 2009. The Brazilian senior team then used him to help them win the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and rank fourth at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He is described as “a direct powerhouse of a center- or wide-forward who knows his way around the box” by FIFA’s official website.

He had a robust frame for a football player and was given the nickname “Hulk” because of his resemblance to actor Lou Ferrigno, who in the 1970s portrayed the Incredible Hulk on the show of the same name.
