Embattled former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales has denied any financial irregularities during his tenure as Spanish Football Federation president.
The 46-year-old, who is standing trial in the Spanish capital, Madrid, told reporters after the court session that has never mishandled the treasury of the Spanish Football Federation or received ‘brown envelop’ payments as alleged by prosecutors.
“What I maintain, and will always maintain, and I am convinced that justice will (demonstrate), is there has never been any money received in an irregular way,” he said.
Speaking at length on the allegations, the former UEFA Vice President said he has answered all queries asked and is interested in clearing his name and coming out unscathed.
“I have answered all the questions I was asked, if I have to come here again I will be here, collaborating — I am the one most interested in clearing everything up,” he added.
Rubiales finally resigned from his role as the Spanish Football Federation President following global outrage on his forced kissing of Spain women’s national team player Jennifer Hermoso during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
He was also under the radar of Spanish authorities for corruption involving the signing of suspicious contracts while he was helming affairs as the country’s chief football administrator.
This led to his arrest in April 2024, and has been standing trial for the charges.
Rubiales has maintained he is innocent – a position he will prove in court through his legal representatives or risk prison sentence.
