As the spread of the coronavirus continues to put on hold major football leagues across the world, German Bundesliga will resume on April 30th to minimise financial crisis and to ensure that the season ends on June 30th, 2020.

Recently, the top two divisions in German club football met and agreed that all matches should remain suspended till April 30 due to the outbreak. However, some critics thought the date would be extended since the outbreak is still waxing strong.

Despite the fact that Germany is one of the worst-hit countries in the world as far as the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned, the German Football League says the April 30th resumption date is sacrosanct.

Besides that, the 36 clubs in the top two divisions have been deliberating on ways the clubs can resume live matches behind closed doors.

To make such a plan work, the German Football League says plans are ongoing to set up a medical task force made up of doctors and experts which would develop a system to check that the health of all footballers and staff are in good shape before matches resume.

The league’s chief executive, Christian Seifert said: “We aim to end the season by June 30th, and that is still the status today.

“If games can take place, it can be assumed that they will necessarily have to take place without spectators, possibly into next season, maybe until the end of the year.”

Just like in the English Premier League where there have been deliberations on whether the league should be cancelled outrightly or the league should remain suspended till the pandemic is over, the German football league is also trying to ensure that there is a logical conclusion to the season.

In that light, the Chief Executive Officer of Bundesliga table topper, Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in an interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, that the league has to be completed for fairness sake and to reduce financial damage on the clubs.

“It is imperative that we play the season out. Both for reasons of sporting fairness but obviously also to keep the financial damage as low as possible”, he said.
