Center-referee Michael Salisbury was forced to called off Southampton Vs Aston Villa Premier League game when a strange drone was spotted flying over the stadium.

The remote-controlled aircraft was spotted late in the second half of the game in the 40th minute with the scoreline still 0-0.

The referee had to bring the game to a halt as concerns over the safety and security of the players spiked. The players were ushered off the pitch immediately following the incident.

While pandemonium nearly broke out at the St Mary’s Stadium, with frightened fans trying to figure out the motive of the drone, they were asked to remain calm as match officials try to sort out things.

It was an unprecedented scene in a Premier League match. Concerns hinge on the security and safety of the players and match officials, including a possible illegal streaming of the match by the controller.

This led to 10 minutes delay, but the match was restarted with the players eventually filing back into the pitch to play out the last five minutes of the first half.

The first half ended in stale-mate with both sides settling for a barren draw after Southampton has a Kyle Walker-Peters’ goal ruled out for offside.

Despite the long pause due to the drone, only two minutes were added to the end of the first half as the clock had been stopped from when the players left the pitch.

Unai Emery eventually led Aston Villa to a narrow 1-0 win after full time but the invasion by the strange drone dominated the headlines with investigators nosing around to trace where it came from after the match.
