Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher to join their squad.
The Spanish side had made a £33m offer which was accepted by Chelsea last week, but concerns lingered about Gallagher’s interest in the move.
However, on Sunday night, August 4, the 24-year-old confirmed his willingness to make the switch.
Meanwhile, During most of Unai Emery’s tenure at Aston Villa, Conor Gallagher had been on his radar, with interest ramping up significantly in the January 2023 and current transfer windows.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the deal claiming that a five-year contract has been verbally agreed between the player and the Spanish club, who have also gone through negotiations with Chelsea to settle on £33m deal.
However, the two clubs need to complete some paperwork before the 24-year-old can travel to Spain to finalize the transfer.
Gallagher is set to fly to Atletico to undergo a medical examination and sign his contract, bringing an end to his 18-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had offered him a two-year deal with the option for an additional year, but the terms did not suit Gallagher due to the contract length and the limited role in the squad.
The midfielder’s departure from Chelsea was influenced by a mismatch in playing style under new manager Enzo Maresca, where he was not expected to be a regular starter.
Gallagher, who featured in five matches during Euro 2024, will now continue his career at Atletico Madrid.
