Coach Austin Eguavoen would be paid just in incentives as the Super Eagles’ coach during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, according to Nigerian Football Federation.

After the Nigeria Football Federation fired Gernot Rohr in December, Austin Eguavoen was appointed as Coach on a temporary basis.

After assuming command in August 2016, Rohr became Nigeria’s longest-serving manager, although his contract was terminated after leading the Eagles to the 2022 World Cup qualification play-offs and a place at the Cameroon Nations Cup.

The Franco-German also led Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup and third place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

“Eguavoen is on the NFF payroll, and he will not be paid for the position he is performing as the team’s temporary coach,” NFF President Amaju Pinnick recently revealed on Arise TV.

“As the team advances in the tournament, he will be eligible for the winning bonuses.”Eguavoen has already won his first two group games at the event, securing their position in the competition’s round of 16.

Fans in Nigeria must be pinching themselves. This had to be a dream.

Nigeria have emerged as the standard bearer of respect for Africa’s flailing heavyweights in an Africa Cup of Nations that has proven to be not just the most surprising but also the most risky of circumstances for the continent’s large teams.

Ghana, Algeria, Senegal, and the Ivory Coast have all fought valiantly against mediocre opponents. To the point that the reigning champions are currently locked in a death match with the Elephants for a spot in the round of 16.

On Tuesday, Ghana was eliminated by the Comoros, losing 3-2 in a game that they urgently needed to win, leaving an entire nation stunned.

Senegal may have won their group, but it was by a hair’s breadth: the difference between Senegal’s five points that ensured progression and three draws that would have meant an early flight home was a late penalty against Zimbabwe in their first game.

Who would have guessed Nigeria, on the other hand?

On Wednesday, the Super Eagles made short work of fending off the threat of Guinea Bissau, completing their 100 percent record in the group stage and becoming the only one of Cameroon’s 24 teams to win all maximum points available.

Augustine Eguavoen has matched his 2006 record of becoming the only Super Eagles coach to win all three group games at AFCON.

It also means that Nigerian fans are now genuinely excited about the chance of a fourth African crown, although before to the competition, they would have been content simply to have their team compete.
