Bayern Munich talisman, Robert Lewandowski believes that the German club can create history by beating Mexican side Tigres in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.

If Bayern Munich win the prestigious title, they will become the second club in the history of world football to win six different titles during a football calendar year. The first club to achieve such a feat was FC Barcelona during the reign of Pep Guardiola at the end of the 2008-2009 season.

As it stands, Bayern Munich are a title closer to sextuple. The club has already won two continental titles in the 2019-2020 season – UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. In addition to that, Bayern won the domestic treble last season – Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and DFB/DFL-Supercup.

In those championships, Robert Lewandowski was at the center of them all, scoring a total number of 55 goals and providing 10 assists in 47 games in all competitions last season.

The 32-year-old Polish striker is highly involved in the current edition of the Fifa Club World Cup, the only title left to be concluded in the 2019-2020 season. He has recorded two goals in the tournament already and he is condemned to score at least two more goals against Tigres on Thursday, February 11, to become the highest goalscorer of the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup campaign.

Tigres’ 35-year-old French striker, Andre-Pierre Gignac, is currently the highest goalscorer of the competition. He has three goals to his name.

However, going home with the tournament golden boot is not the priority of Robert Lewandowski who is yet to win the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup title in his football career.

Hence, his focus is to win his first Club World Cup title and Bayern Munich’s second Club World Cup title. The first and the last time Bayern Munich won the 17-year-old football competition was in 2013.

“The next final for us means that we can win the sixth title. That means a lot for football history,” Lewandowski said.

“We can write history but it is also a big challenge. When you are that close to a title then you want to win it.”

While Tigres forward Carlos Gonzalez said: “No other Mexican team have gone this far, but now we want more.

“We came here hoping to lift the trophy and now that we’re close, we’re encouraged and motivated that we can achieve our goal.”

Bayern Munich defeated AI Ahly 2-0 to get to the final of the competition while Tigres defeated Brazilian side Palmeiras 1-0 on route to the FIFA Club World Cup final.
