24-year-old French international, Christopher Nkunku has signed a new contract with his club RB Leipzig until 2026. Christopher Nkunku was heavily linked with a move away from the club with the likes of English Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea trying to secure his services.

However, the young star has decided to commit his future to RB Leipzig.

Nkunku had an impressive 2021/22 season which is regarded as his best season so far. The forward scored a total of 35 goals for the German Bundesliga club, assisting 19 times in 50 appearances. He helped RB Leipzig to win the DFB-Pokal trophy and was named the best player of the season in the Bundesliga.

Many clubs across Europe decided to sign him ahead of next season but he rejected all the offers.

While telling the club’s official website why he decided to stay with RB Leipzig, Nkunku said: “I’m pleased to continue wearing the RB Leipzig shirt. After our great achievement in winning the DFB-Pokal, it remained clear that my story here isn’t over yet – we want more!

“I was really impressed with the club’s efforts to keep me, so a big thanks goes to those responsible for the trust in me and especially to Oliver Mintzlaff, with whom I was always in close contact.

“RB Leipzig have made a name for themselves on the international stage in recent years and have shown time and again that we can compete for titles. We want to build on that going forward and go one step further.”

Many supporters of the two Premier League giants will receive this as bad news because their clubs wanted to sign the striker. Chelsea has just agreed to loan their most expensive striker Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan leaving the center-forward position empty.

Although the team still has other players who can fit into the position, Thomas Tuchel is searching for a new player to replace Lukaku. The Blues have reached out to Manchester City to sign Raheem Sterling or Gabriel Jesus but no offer has been accepted.

On the other hand, Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag is yet to sign a player since he took charge at Old Trafford.

The former Ajax head coach is set to improve his team ahead of next season and Christopher Nkunku was on his transfer wishlist. The contract renewal by Nkunku means the Manchester side will switch their attention to another striker.
