Christian Karembeu has put out a piece of painful information, expressing that his family members (niece and nephew) have been killed in violence rocking New Caledonia.

Seven people have lost their lives during trouble in the French pacific territory, after heated and controversial voting reforms.

Karembeu was born in the territory and he is currently a strategic advisor, sporting director, and ambassador for Greek giants Olympiacos.

Speaking during an interview with Europe 1, Christian Karembeu shared the heart-rending information, saying: “I lost members of my family. That’s why I remained silent because I’m in mourning. Two people in my family were shot in the head.”

The 53-year-old added: “We hope that there will be investigations into these murders.”

New Caledonia is a group of islands between Australia and Fiji. Protest in the territory has been spearheaded by the indigenous Kanak community, of whom Karembeu is a member.

Currently, voting in the locality is limited to indigenous Kanaks and individuals who arrived from France before 1998.

Reports indicate that the planned reform would bring about the emergence of more French residents being able to vote – including individuals who have been in New Caledonia for at least a decade – 10 years.
