Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has dumped Brentford for Manchester United after a series of back and forths about his future in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder who survived a cardiac arrest in 2021 returned to football in February 2022 after months of being sidelined due to his heart condition.

Recall that when most clubs, including Christian Eriksen’s former club, Inter Milan were not ready to give him a chance to continue with his football career after surviving a death scare in June 2021, Brentford took the bold step by offering him a 6-month deal on January 31, 2022.

To the surprise of many, Christian Eriksen took the Premier League by storm as he provided four assists and scored a goal in just 11 games for Brentford. His performance encouraged Denmark national team to recall him to the team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Before his contract with Brentford expired this summer, the Premier League club which gained promotion to the elite league ahead of the 2021-2022 season tried to extend his stay at the club but he refused to sign a new deal until his contract with the club expired.

From that point, Eriksen attracted the attention of a couple of clubs in the Premier League especially Manchester United, a side that lost two of their midfielders, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba on free transfers this summer.

After a bit of back and forth, Christian Eriksen agreed to sign a three-year deal with the Red Devils which will keep him at Old Trafford until June 30, 2025.

In his first interview with Manchester United’s official website, Christian Eriksen described the Premier League club as a special club that he can’t wait to play for. He also described the club’s new coach, Erik ten Hag as a fantastic coach.

Christian Eriksen said: “Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started. I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.

“I have seen Erik’s work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach. Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future. I still have major ambitions in the game, there is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey.”

Christian Eriksen officially became a player of Manchester United on July 15, 2022. He signed a three-year deal with the Red Devils which will expire on June 30, 2025.

Christian Eriksen started his football career at Danish youth club Odense BK Youth on July 1, 2008. From there, he joined the Dutch club, Ajax on January 1, 2009.

On August 30, 2013, Tottenham Hotspur paid Ajax €14.15 million to acquire Eriksen’s signature. He spent seven years at the Premier League club before he joined the Italian club, Inter Milan on January 28, 2020, for a transfer fee worth €27million. He helped Inter to win the Serie A title during the 2020-2021 season.

Unfortunately for him, Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in June 2021 while representing Denmark in Euro 2020. Due to his health condition, a device had to be planted in him to enable his heart to function always.

This development forced Inter Milan to terminate his contract on mutual grounds and forced him to stay away from football for almost seven months before Brentford signed him on January 31, 2022, on a free transfer.

So far in his club’s career, Christian Eriksen has played 542 times in all competitions in which he scored 115 goals and provided 162 assists.

As for his international career, Eriksen has played 115 times for Denmark national team in which he scored 38 goals.
