Todd Boehly is expected to relinquish his role as Chairman of English giants Chelsea in 2027, according to reports.

Reports indicate that the American co-owners of Chelsea agreed during the takeover that they can pass the chairmanship role at the club every five years, with Boehly set to step down from the helm at the end of the 2026/27 season.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the London-based Club together during the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Chelsea owner at the time, Roman Abramovich had to put the club up for sale due to political issues arising over his Russian nationality.

The takeover of the Club was completed in May 2022 in a deal worth a staggering £4.25 billion.

How is the ownership structure at Chelsea?

Clearlake Capital, a private equity firm managed by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano holds the majority of the shares with 61.5%, while the remaining 38.5% is split equally among Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss, and Mark Walter.

Despite owning a minority of the shares, Boehly was given the chairman role as part of the 2022 sale agreement which translated that his group would be liable to pay any first losses in the event of a realization or a sale.

Is it possible that Todd Boehly can return as chairman of Chelsea after 2027?

The American Billionaire could come back in 2032 if he retains his share but it is yet to be known if that would happen. There were suspicions regarding issues in the relationship between Boehly and Cleverlake but the rumors have been debunked, and the duo have a “professional working partnership”.

A decision on the next Chairman has not been made, Eghbali or Feliciano of the Cleverlake Capital could take on the role themselves or they could hire a third party to take up the role.

Regardless of who arrives at the helm, there will be little to no significant changes in the club’s policies.

Most notably, the signing of young players will remain a key part of the club’s policy, and it is expected to change in the coming years.

Chelsea’s fortune under Boehly – Positive or Negative?

Chelsea fans have grown increasingly impatient with the turn of results ever since the 50-year-old American businessman took over.

The Blues ended the 2022/23 season in 12th position with 44 points, their worst tally since the inception of the English Premier League in 1992.

This season has not been an exception for the Blues as they’ve always hovered around mid-table.

Many have called for the players and manager Mauricio Pochettino to be given time to get things up and running, as success is not very far off, it is possibly only a matter of time.

The Blues ownership have been questioned in recent months concerning their targets and whether their ambitions are still as lofty as they were years ago under Roman Abramovich.

Anyway, it is understood that the ownership group hasn’t changed its sole targets, which are; winning matches, competing in Europe’s elite club competition – the UEFA Champions League, and winning massive trophies.

Moreover, Chelsea sit 11th in the Premier League table this campaign and will return to action against Burnley on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
