Chelsea European hopes tumbled in Stamford Bridge as Real Madrid completed a Champions League double over the Blues, bundling them out of Europe’s elite competition.

Brazil international and fast-rising Real Madrid youngster Rodrygo hit a double to compound Chelsea’s woes this season.

After a dismal domestic campaign this season that has seen the Blues battle in the bottom half of the Premier League, the club’s European hopes next season was in the balance in the quarterfinal clash against Real Madrid.

The Champions League quarterfinal exit brought the club’s debacle this season full cycle.

Former manager, Graham Potter, had to be axed from his role as the poor run of form continued with Frank Lampard appointed as new interim manager till the end of the season.

Under Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s malaise has lingered with the team yet to win a match, suffering four straight defeats in a row.

After the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali headed to the Chelsea dressing room to engage and charge the players in a team talk – a step he also took after a shock home defeat to Brighton in the Premier League.

However, some pundits and players have blamed the Chelsea debacle on Todd Boehly’s Chelsea strategy.

Former Chelsea player and legend Didier Drogba described Todd Boehly’s Chelsea as “classless.” While endorsing the signing of young players into the team, Drogba added “Chelsea also needs experienced players” and having an overbloated squad of 30 players may prove difficult for a coach to handle.

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva seems to equally toe the line of Didier Drogba while aiming a swipe at Todd Boehly’s Chelsea strategy.

Speaking after the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, Thiago Silva slammed how Chelsea new owners have been running the club.

“I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step but it has been made,” he said.

Silva seems to absolved the managers of blame while pointing fingers at the club’s ownership.

‘We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision”, he noted.

‘Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.

‘Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.’

Chelsea’s European fate next season was sealed after the defeat to Real Madrid. The club is languished on the bottom half of the league with 39 points from 32 games.

They are 17 points from top finish and 12 points from relegation spot.

Their poor run of form is coming at the backdrop of Todd Boehly’s £600m raid of the transfer market since taking over as new manager.

Despite a change of hands at the dugout, the club is yet to record a win and have suffered four consecutive defeats.

Do you think Todd Boehly’s untempered transfer raid have contributed to the Chelsea debacle?
