Chelsea played like wounded lions when they took on Southampton on Saturday, April 9, 2022, to send a strong message to Real Madrid. Recall that Real Madrid came to Stamford Bridge on April 6 and stunned the Premier League side 3-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final game.

Real Madrid’s victory over Chelsea came three days after lowly-rated Brentford defeated Chelsea 4-1 in a Premier League game. The defeat became the second time in the history of Chelsea that a newly promoted club beat Chelsea with three or more goals. The first time Chelsea recorded such an ugly feat was in 2021 against West Brom.

Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford was not as painful as the defeat to Real Madrid because the 3-1 defeat could end Chelsea’s journey in the UEFA Champions League campaign this season.

Hence, ahead of the Premier League game against Southampton, coach Thomas Tuchel revealed that he and his players had to have an “honest” meeting due to the successive run of poor games in seven games.

Also, after Real Madrid defeated Chelsea on Wednesday, Thomas Tuchel was so angry that he had to tell reporters that if his players fail to beat Southampton, the second leg of the tie is as good as dead.

Fortunately, Chelsea’s players responded excellently against Southampton earlier today by hitting them with six goals and also keeping a clean sheet.

Chelsea started scoring as early as the 8th minute, thanks to a strike from Marcos Alonso who was an unused substitute in the UEFA Champions League game against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Mason Mount followed up Alonso’s opener by doubling Chelsea’s lead in the 16th minute. Timo Warner who was also an unused substitute in the Champions League game got on the scoresheet in the 21st minute.

In the 31st minute, Kai Havertz who scored Chelsea’s consolation goal against Real Madrid on Wednesday also made it to the scoresheet.

The first half ended 4-0, leaving the St Mary’s stadium in total silence. In the second half, Southampton were left with nothing to fight for as Chelsea scored the 5th goal in the 49th minute thanks to another strike from Warner.

Mason Mount closed the show with a 54th-minute goal to make it a 6-0 bashing away from home. This means that Chelsea now have 62 points in 30 games and their 3rd spot is still secure.

The 6-0 victory over Southampton has risen the hope of Chelsea’s fans ahead of the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final game against Real Madrid on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Chelsea’s fans are hoping that their players could put up a similar performance against Real Madrid to overturn the 3-1 defeat.
