Chelsea have completed the signing of Barcelona youngster Marc Guiu for a fee worth £6 million according to a statement from the Premier League side.
Guiu, who is currently 18 years old, joined the Premier League club after he decided to leave the La Liga giants even though he has one year left on his contract.
After sealing the deal, the striker said, “It’s an immense joy to sign for Chelsea, and I struggled to sleep ahead of the journey here because I was so excited. Ever since I was small, it was my dream to play in the Premier League.”
“Now I have the opportunity to come here to Chelsea, and I will work my hardest to be successful for the club.”
Other European football clubs were interested in signing Marc Guiu and were preparing to meet his release clause of £6 million, but the talented striker chose to join Chelsea.
Also, Barcelona were working behind the scenes to ensure they tied down the striker on a long-term contract. However, he chose to move to London to play for Chelsea ahead of the 2024-25 season.
The factor behind his move to Chelsea was that he was promised first-team football, which was difficult for him to get at Barcelona.
He regularly found himself behind Robert Lewandowski in the pecking order. During the January transfer window, Barcelona proceeded to sign a striker named Victor Roque who was also rated ahead of him.
Marc Guiu joined Barcelona at the age of seven and went to the La Masia academy. He was called up to FC Barcelona’s first team action in the 2023-24 season.
The striker scored just 23 seconds into the match against Athletic Bilbao on October 22, 2023. His goal was the winning goal of the match.
In the Champions League match against Antwerp, the striker scored in the 91st minute as Barcelona suffered a shocking loss.
He is a natural number 9 who is capable of scoring exceptional goals. Guiu has an attribute that is not commonly present in the Barcelona Academy.
Sources in Barcelona feel it was an error not to give the striker an opportunity in the first-team squad.
