The Portuguese defensive sensation is Chelsea’s sixth signing this summer after the Blues completed deals for Tosin Aderabioyo, Estevao Willian, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Omari Kellyman.

Sources close to the club reveal more additions are expected to further beef up the squad before the transfer window closes. Meanwhile, Veiga, who starred for Basel in the Swiss elite division, will hope to continue his prolific career with the Blues as he sets out for a new chapter in the Premier League.

Renato Veiga career

Renato Veiga is a Portuguese professional footballer, who is set for a new chapter with Chelsea in the Premier League after completing a move to the London outfit from Basel in Switzerland. Veiga is originally a midfielder, playing mainly in defensive roles. He has also been used as a defender, playing centrally at the back.

At Chelsea, the young footballing sensation is expected to fit into the club’s defence plan and is likely to be used as a center-back instead of a defensive midfielder.

Veiga started his football career in 2010 when he was seven years old. He played for Sporting CP Academy for three years from 2010 to 2013 before joining Real S.C Academy in 2013. At Real S.C. Academy, Veiga nurtured his footballing skills to fruition and was ahead of his peers with his composure and ball-carrying abilities.

After his spell with Real S.C., he returned to Sporting CP Academy and began his senior club career with the club, signing his first professional football contract. However, he was placed in the club’s reserve team and could not nail down a spot with the main team.

After a failed struggle to break into the club’s first team, he joined Augsburg on loan, where he will taste first-team football. In Germany, it was another deadlock for Veiga. After 13 Bundesliga appearances, he failed to pass the mark, leading to the termination of his loan contract.

From Augsburg, he joined Basel in Switzerland where he breathed life back into his career. He signed for the Swiss outfit on a four-year contract, worth £4.5m, and scored twice in his 23 appearances. With a series of brilliant individual play and great skills, he attracted interest from top clubs in Europe with Chelsea leading the race before subsequently completing the move.
