The 2024-25 La Liga title race is likely to be a three-horse race between champions Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid.

These three clubs have dominated the Spanish top flight in the last decades. Hence, the assertion that the battle for the La Liga title will be contested by the three clubs is not a detour from the truth.

Taking a closer look on their chances, Real Madrid are still top of the pecking order. Los Blancos are likely to lead the race with the two other rivals challenging for the title. But what are the three team’s chances to win the 2024-25 Spain Championships? Let’s dive in.

Real Madrid 2024-25 La Liga title chances

After losing the title to arch-domestic rivals Barcelona in the 2022-23 season, Real Madrid roared back into the scene last season. A prolific domestic run saw the Galacticos overrun the Catalan giants in the race for the title.

It was a competitive start between the two teams. However, Barcelona lost bearing in the run-ins, leaving the Madrid-based outfit to run out with victory. The triumph was matched with a brilliant European campaign that saw the team clinch a record-extending 15th Champions League title.

All these were accomplished without the services of former PSG and French talismanic striker Kylian Mbappe. Now, the club has boosted their attacking ranks with the arrival of the French footballing sensation.

Mbappe got off the mark in his first competitive game, scoring in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Atalanta.

Brazilian attacking sensation Endrick is also in the Los Blancos attacking options. The likes of Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois, who missed a large part of last season with hamstring issues, are also back.

With the list of returning players and new additions, the club is expected to stage a formidable challenge to defend the title.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid La Liga title chances: can they stop Real Madrid?

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are expected to pose a challenge to Real Madrid’s La Liga title charge. However, the intensity of such opposition cannot be determined.

For Barcelona, it was a disappointing campaign at the end of last season. Tensions brewed between former manager Xavi Hernandez and the club, leading to the sack of the former. A new man – Hansi Flick – is now in charge of the dugout.

Known for his extensive experience in European club football, Hansi Flick presented Barcelona fans with a semblance of hope on the club’s readiness to wrestle against Real Madrid in the race for the title.

He oversaw the team’s 2-1 pre-season victory over the defending champions. However, the team was pegged back to default settings collapsing to a thumping 3-0 defeat to visiting Ligue 1 side Monaco in the Joan Camper Cup.

Also, they have only made two reinforcements – in the transfer markets this summer, further casting doubts over their chances against a well-fortified Real Madrid side.

For Atletico Madrid, it has been over a decade since the Madrid-based outfit won the La Liga title. However, it appears the club has tightened their seatbelt for the battle ahead.

They have secured the services of former Manchester City striker and World Cup winner Julian Alvarez for €75million in preparation for the new campaign.

Another striker, Alexander Sorloth, and defender Robin Le Normand, has also been added to the squad. While the club is still miles away from their cross-city rivals and La Liga dominos Real Madrid, they are likely to challenge for the title.
