The Confederation of African Football (CAF), have confirmed that the 2024 CAF Awards will take place in Marrakech, Morocco.
When Will The 2024 CAF Awards Be Held?
The award ceremony will be held on December 16, 2024, and it is the third consecutive time the prestigious ceremony will be hosted in the North African country.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to reveal the final list of contenders for the Men’s Best Player.
Contenders For The Men’s Player of the Year Award
Nigeria’s duo of Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface, alongside Serhou Guirassy of Guinea and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz, are expected to contest for the prize.
Ademola Lookman Considered Favorite For The Prize
Ademola Lookman has been tipped as a huge favorite for the prize, having helped Atalanta clinch the UEFA Europa League last term.
Lookman netted a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen and that made him become the first player in history to do so.
Ademola Lookman scored 17 goals and delivered 10 assists in 45 matches for Atalanta last campaign.
Lookman also guided Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, albeit losing to Ivory Coast 2-1 in the decisive fixture.
The Nigeria international scored 3 goals and provided 1 assist in 7 matches at the tournament.
Victor Boniface
Victor Boniface also inspired Bayer Leverkusen to the German Bundesliga title alongside the DFB Pokal.
Interestingly, Boniface also helped Xabi Alonso’s side win the German Super Cup title before the commencement of the 2024/25 season.
Boniface scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists in 34 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen last season.
Serhou Guirassy
Serhou Guirassy was phenomenal in attack for VFB Stuttgart last season, with his mesmeric showing in the attacking department earning him a move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024.
Guirassy finished as the 2nd top scorer in the Bundesliga last term, having netted 28 goals and contributed 2 assists in 28 matches last term.
Cumulatively, Serhou Guirassy scored 30 goals and provided 3 assists in 30 appearances for VFB Stuttgart in the 2023/24 season.
Brahim Diaz
Brahim Diaz had an impressive season last term, helping Real Madrid claim the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, and La Liga title.
Before the commencement of the 2024/25 season, Diaz also assisted Los Blancos in winning the UEFA Super Cup.
Brahim Diaz scored 12 goals and provided 9 assists in 44 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side last season.
Sebastien Haller
Sebastien Haller could also sneak into the final list, having helped Ivory Coast win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Haller also aided Borussia Dortmund in reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League, albeit losing to Real Madrid by 2-1.
Who Are The Current Holders Of The CAF Men And Women’s Player Of The Year Award?
Victor Osimhen is the reigning African Footballer of the Year, having claimed the award in December 2023, submerging Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah alongside Morocco and PSG’s Achraf Hakimi.
Nigerian female football great Asisat Oshoala is the current holder of the women’s award, having outwitted South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Barbara Banda from Zambia.
Fascinatingly, the trio are also among players that would battle to claim the prize at the 2024 CAF Awards.
