Burnley’s home game against Watford on Wednesday night has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak among the visitors’ squad; Watford had an insufficient number of available first-team players; this is the second Premier League fixture to be canceled this week, following Brentford vs. Manchester United on Tuesday.

This is the third Premier League match in a row to be canceled due to Covid outbreaks, following Tottenham’s trip to Brighton on Sunday and Brentford’s home game against Manchester United on Tuesday.

It’s also the second time in less than two weeks that a Burnley home match against a London club has been called off at the last minute, after Tottenham’s visit to Turf Moor was canceled on November 28 due to snow.

The Premier League also stated: “When considering a postponement request, the board takes into account a variety of sporting and medical factors.

“Each decision is taken on a case-by-case basis with everyone’s health of utmost importance.

“In light of the recent rise in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced emergency measures. These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing, and limiting treatment time.”

The Premier League stated that Watford lacked “a sufficient amount of first-team players” to complete the match.

It went on to say that the decision was made “with regret” and that it apologized for “the inconvenience and disruption caused.”

A statement read: “The Premier League understands this decision will disappoint and frustrate fans who were due to attend this evening’s game.”

A new date for the match has yet to be determined.
