Burnley are a step away from the relegation zone after they managed to get a 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Thursday, May 19, 2022.

The relegation-threatened team traveled to the Villa Park for a must-win 37th Premier League game of the season which was against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa. They were condemned to get a draw or a win from the game to keep their hope of surviving relegation alive.

Fortunately for them, they took the lead in the 45th minute after Burnley’s Ashley Barnes converted a spot-kick in the 45th minute. The goal was a huge relief for the traveling fans because if the scoreline had stayed that way until the end of the game, it would have given Burnley more assurance that they would escape relegation.

Unfortunately for the visitors, two minutes after the second half started, Aston Villa scored the equalizer through the boots of Emi Buendía in the 48th minute.

As the game was going on, Everton defeated Crystal Palace at Goodison Park which meant that Everton have survived relegation, leaving Burnley in the battle.

Immediately the news filtered into the stadium, it added more pressure on Burnley who were trying as much as possible not to concede another goal.

Aston Villa continued to pile pressure on Burnley throughout the game. Things got worst for the away team when the club’s Matthew Lowton was shown a red card in the additional minute. But the away team was able to hold on to the 1-1 draw.

The draw was enough to take Burnley away from the relegation zone but has not ended the club’s relegation battle for the 2021-2022 season.

Burnley’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa left Villa on the 14th spot on the league table with 45 points in 37 games. While Burnley are currently sitting on the 17th spot on the league table with 35 points in 37 games.

Mike Jackson and his team are ahead of Leeds United because of their superior goal difference. Burnley have minus 18 goals while Leeds United have minus 38 goals.

As it stands, Burnley are still relegation-threatened. They are currently having the same point as 18th placed Leeds United with a game to go.

This means that either Burnley or Leeds United could go on relegation alongside relegated Watford and Norwich City. But Mike Jackson and his men have the goal difference advantage over Leeds United.

However, that could mean nothing on the last day of the Premier League campaign (May 22, 2022, at 16:00) if Leeds United beat Brentford and Burnley lose to Newcastle United.

Mike Jackson and his men will be on a safer side if they get similar result as Leeds United or beat Newcastle United with any goal margin.

After the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, Burnley’s interim manager Mike Jackson acknowledged that Burnley’s relegation battle is not over.

“It’s not mission accomplished. The least we wanted was a point. We’re a little disappointed not to get the three,” Burnley interim manager Mike Jackson said.

“Everything I’ve seen tonight is what this group does. They’ve had to dig in, they’ve had to work. We’ll need it again on Sunday.”
