Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes has stressed that even if the club win the Europa League title this season, it would not be enough achievement. The Portuguese star who has been United’s talisman since he joined the club in January 2020, said winning the title would be just a signal of improvement.

Manchester United will face Italian Serie A side, Roma at 20:00 today, May 6, 2021, in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final round. The Premier League club won the first leg 6-2 at Old Trafford which means that United are most likely to scale through to the final.

If they beat or draw with Roma tonight, they could face fellow Premier League club, Arsenal or Spanish La Liga club, Villarreal in the final. United’s potential oppositions for the Europa League final are clubs the Manchester side can beat on a good day which makes them the favorite to win the tournament.

If United make it to the final which will be staged in Gdansk, Poland on May 26, it would make it the second time in 4 years that the club made it to the final of the competition. Recall that they won the 2017 edition of the competition under coach Jose Mourinho.

As for Bruno Fernandes who has scored 26 goals and provided 16 assists in 52 games this season, the 26-year-old attacking midfielder is targeting bigger honors with Manchester United.

Fernandes still have over four years left on his current contract with Manchester United which means that he has a lot of time to push the club to the pinnacle of football once again.

He has won the heart of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he has been almost indispensable for United since he joined the club from Sporting Lisbon last season.

On winning the Europa League title for United, Fernandes said: “For us, it is a signal of improvement if we win the Europa League, because last season we didn’t win anything. So, if we win a trophy this season it is an improvement – but still not enough for us.

“But it is something growing up from the club. From the players, it is a sign that we are doing a little bit better, but we have still a lot to improve on as I said before, and we will improve.

“Honestly, for me when you play a club like this your standard has to be high.

“For me, the game against Roma was not my best, but of course on numbers, everyone will say it is the best one I have done because the two goals and two assists I think was the first time I did it for the club, but of course it was a good game.

“I think also individually I played really well but I want to improve. I want to improve so I have to do maybe next time two assists and two goals, or three goals and two assists to improve again, but the most important for me is the way we win and we are closer to getting the trophy.”

Manchester United will return to the peak of club football in Europe which is the UEFA Champions League next season and their target would be to win the title or be a major contender.

To achieve that, they would need a compact team, hence, Bruno Fernandes would not want his teammates, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba to leave the club this summer.

Cavani and Pogba have been subjects of transfer speculations for weeks and they might leave if United fail to bring things under their control. Cavani’s contract with the club will expire this summer and he might leave because he feels he is not getting enough game time.

While Pogba still have over a season left on his contract with Manchester United but he and the club are yet to agree on a contract extension.

“Of course we know they are really important for us, the qualities they have for us are difficult to find on the market for a good price,” Fernandes said.

“I think everyone knows the team is moving up and with their help too so it is important for us that we keep our best players and we keep improving the team.”
