It was a tricky tie for the Bundesliga title hopefuls. They have won two of their last five Bundesliga home matches against Mainz, losing two and drawing one.

In the 15th minute, Borussia Dortmund suffered a big blow to their title hopes when Hanche-Olsen gave Mainz a surprise lead.

Sebastian Haller blew away the chance missing the spotkick. Mainz continued to build momentum upfront after the hosts missed the penalty.

Against the run of play, Mainz doubled the lead in the 24th minute with Onisiwo’s goal. Conceding five minutes after missing a spot-kick dampened the team’s morale as they visitors close in on destroying their Bundesliga title hopes just 24 minutes into the game.

Meanwhile, reports from the RheinEnergieStadion showed Coman had given Bayern Munich the lead from the 8th minute.

Borussia ramped up attempts to find their way back into the game, trailing by two goals but Mainz drop deeper into their half as they fought back to defend the lead.

Despite losing possession to the hosts, Mainz held off the pressure and ran out with a 2-0 lead in the first half.

It was a disappointing first 45 minutes. Dortmund had the next 45 minutes to turn the game around and clinch their first Bundesliga trophy in over a decade.

They exerted more control of proceedings in the second half but had the resilience of the visitors to fight off.

Bayern Munich still maintained their narrow 1-0 lead hence Dortmund needed three goals to claim the title.

With the hour mark crossed, Borussia Dortmund were still unable to break the goal deadlock. Mainz held on to the lead, fighting with grit to bag all three points.

Late in the 69th minute Guerreiro restored comeback hopes for the hosts, scoring to reduce the deficit.

Dortmund received a late lifeline on the title race with reports from the RheinEnergieStadion revealing Koln have scored a penalty to level the scores against Bayern Munich.

Borussia Dortmund now needed a draw against Mainz to clinch the trophy should Koln draw Bayern Munich but Musiala restored Bayern Munich’s lead in the 89th minutes.

Sule hit a stoppage-time equaliser for Borussia Dortmund but it was not enough as they lost out at the death in the Bundesliga title race after settling for a 2-2 draw. Bayern’s superior goals difference made all the difference.
